The National Transportation Safety Board and other agencies are investigating not only what went wrong, but also what went right Thursday when a US Airways flight ended in the Hudson River without any deaths or major injuries.

“Having a successful ditching is a very rare event,” Kitty Higgins of the NTSB said Friday.

“We’ll not only celebrate what worked here, but also learn what worked. So many times you’re only focused on what went wrong. A lot of things went right yesterday.”

Divers struggled against strong currents and frigid water temperatures to retrieve critical pieces of the puzzle from the Hudson River, where US Airways flight 1549 ended up less than three minutes after it took off from New York’s LaGuardia Airport Thursday afternoon.

The flight data and pit voice recorders — both critical to determining exactly what happened — remained attached to the tail section of the aircraft, which was still partially submerged but secured to moorings. Video Watch a former pilot tell how to water-land a plane »

Workers will be at the site until midnight, rigging the aircraft so it can be lifted out Saturday morning, attached to a barge and moved to a secure location for investigation, Higgins said.

Both engines from the Airbus A320 double-engine jet were on the river bottom, after the water landing’s impact apparently detached them from the plane. Authorities are using side-scan sonar to locate the engines, Higgins said.

The engines also will be brought in as part of the investigation into what happened, including the possibility of bird strikes.

“I don’t want to characterize anything at this point about this particular accident because we are just at the beginning stages,” Higgins said, adding that this accident would be the first “in a very long time” where possible bird strikes may have been a factor. Meanwhile, passengers, city officials and aviation experts heaped praise on pilot Chesley B. “Sully” Sullenberger and his crew, as well as first responders who acted quickly to minimize passengers’ injuries in below-freezing temperatures and frigid water.

The White House said President Bush called Sullenberger to praise him for “his heroic efforts to ensure the safety of his passengers and the people in the area.”

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Sullenberger executed an “incredibly skillful emergency landing.” The pilot and crew of the flight will receive the key to the city, he told reporters Friday. “We typically like you to land at our airports,” he joked, but said the water landing worked out with the best possible outcome. “We saw a lot of heroism in the Hudson yesterday,” Bloomberg said.

The mayor also gave certificates of appreciation to first responders who scrambled to help passengers to safety.

Shortly after the flight, bound for Charlotte, North Carolina, took off at 3:26 p.m. Thursday, passengers noticed quickly that something was awry. See a map of the plane’s flight path »

A source familiar with the situation told CNN that Sullenberger reported a double bird strike, which was taken to mean that birds were sucked into both the jet’s engines. The FAA said witnesses reported seeing the plane hit a flock of birds.

Sullenberger was given clearance to return to LaGuardia for an emergency landing, a source said, but instead, he was forced to find someplace else to ditch the plane. In crowded New York City, the Hudson River provided the best option. Video Watch how the landing and rescue happened »

After the plane came to a stop, passengers quickly got out, standing on the partially submerged wings or on the emergency exit chutes, which also serve as life rafts.

New York Waterway Capt. Vince Lombardi, operating a ferry in the Hudson, said he noticed something in the water as the boat pulled out of Pier 70.

“I said to my deck hand, ‘That’s an odd-looking boat,’ ” he told reporters Friday. “He said, ‘I think that’s an airplane.’ ”

The ferry headed straight for the plane, he said.

“I was a little overwhelmed and scared for the people. The water is about 32 degrees. The outside air temp was in the 20s. We were worried if we didn’t get them out right away, there would be casualties.”

As he arrived, he said, most passengers were calm, but some were cheering and crying. Some said, “Get me out of the water, please, I’m cold.”

US Airways Crash Caught on Video Flight 1549 Hudson River US Coast Guard Vessel Traffic Service

(Video courtesy of Coast Guard Vessel Traffic Service)
New York–The Coast Guard and National Transportation Safety Board released Coast Guard footage today of the U.S. Airways passenger plane as it conducted an emergency landing into the Hudson River Jan. 15, 2009.

The Coast Guard is conducting a safety zone around the plane, which is now located at Battery Park City, N.Y., while a commercial salvage team is working to remove the plane from the water.
The Coast Guard, New York Police and Fire Departments, New York Waterways and Circle Line ferry rescue teams launched a multi-asset response yesterday when the plane ditched onto the Hudson River, at approximately 3:30 p.m.

Upon initial notification, Coast Guard Sector New York launched a fleet of small rescue boats and the 87-foot Coast Guard Cutter Ridley was diverted to the scene. The Coast Guard Cutter Katherine Walker also arrived on scene to ist in the search and rescue efforts and enforcement of the safety zones.

Three Coast Guard helicopters from Air Station Atlantic City, N.J., and one from Air Station Cape Cod, Mass., worked closely with New York City Police air ets to provide aerial support.

The video was captured by Coast Guard Vessel Traffic Service.  The purpose of a VTS is to provide active monitoring and navigational advice for vessels in particularly confined and busy waterways. There are two main types of VTS, surveillance and non-surveillance.

Surveillance systems consist of one or more land-based sensors
(including radar, Automated Identification Systems and closed circuit television sites), which output their signals to a central location where operators monitor and manage vessel traffic movement. Non-surveillance systems consist of one or more reporting points at which ships are required to report their identity, course, speed, and other data to the monitoring authority.

The Coast Guard operates 12 Vessel Traffic Centers (VTC): Prince William Sound, Puget Sound, Valdez, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles/Long Beach, Houston-Galveston, Berwick Bay, Louisville, Saint Mary’s River, Port Arthur, Tampa, and New York.

Taxi Near Crash

Another Taxi hole shoots out in front of me

People ask me a lot about the camera setup:

Heres the info you need:

The parts are perfect do the job just fine and are reliable and well priced. Only thing that I’d say if you wanted say a rear camera you could get a multiple channel DVR put to be honest the forward facing one will do me seen as I haven’t installed a screen in the car.

Yes the exact camera I used is the S51 from ebay seller: CTMALL, Yes there’s alot of Junk out there and I wouldn’t gamble with the ‘eyes’ of your system. Its a Sony CCD and its a very good camera for the price. DVR is from seller: electrocctv, theresalot of the same DVR going around ebay he seems to be the cheapest.

Heres most the bits you’ll need

1) CAMERA: Camera from ebay seller (S51): (Remove the Board from the housing and its aboput the size of a large stamp): http://cgi.ebay.ie/S51-CCTV-Outdoor-SONY-1-3-CCD-Security-Camera-36-IR_W0QQitemZ120306192919QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item120306192919&_trkparms=72%3A1301%7C39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

2) DVR: DVR Recorder was from ebay seller: electroCCTV:
http://cgi.ebay.ie/Mini-Portable-DVR-Audio-Video-Recorder-MOTION-ACTIVATED_W0QQitemZ310090413239QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item310090413239&_trkparms=72%3A1301|39%3A1|66%3A2|65%3A12|240%3A1318&_trksid=p3911.c0.m14

3) SD Memory: I recommend at least 2 x 2GB SD card (The DVR loops but its handy to keep a spare SD in the car in case you want to keep anything to review at a later stage). Get a SANDisk or other reputable brand

4) MIC: The Mic I got from a seller thats no longer register but the Mic below is similar (its a 12v AMplified): http://cgi.ebay.ie/Amplified-Microphone_W0QQitemZ330278379169QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item330278379169&_trksid=p3286.m63.l1177

5) CONVERTER: 1 x BNC to Female RCA for camera, http://cgi.ebay.ie/BNC-male-to-Phono-Female-RCA-Adaptor-Plugs-for-CCTV_W0QQitemZ120315819802QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item120315819802&_trkparms=72%3A1301|39%3A1|66%3A2|65%3A12|240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

6) POWER: Now this is the Tricky part!!! You’ll need a few bits I’ve hardwired mine so there’s no wires on display
….1) first you’ll need to tap the power with a fusetap or a scotchlock. I used accessafuse.com fuse tap but theres many more.

….2) My method I used a 3 way cigarette lighter splitter, I cut off the lighter plug and fitted an inline fuse and connected the live to the fusetap and the ground to a bit f metal on th dash surround you’ll need something like this for that: http://cgi.ebay.ie/USB-Jack-3-Ways-Car-Cigarette-Lighter-Charger-Adapter_W0QQitemZ110298337954QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item110298337954&_trkparms=72%3A1301%7C39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 ,I got mine in LIDL so most Motorfactors would have them. I put in the power for the DVR, Camera and Mic into this and secured them with cable ties criss crossed and stuck it in behind the dash.

….3) Power leads: OK well Its all 12V exept for the DVR which is 5v. For the DVR I got a cigarette multi voltage adapter with loads of heads from Maplins for about 16euros. The one in maplins can be reverse polarised so be careful to use it the right way. Theres alot of adapter that only run 4.5 and 6 ,etc but maplins have 5v on theirs. You need to 2 x 12V cigaretter lighter to DC not sure where you can get these I had a few lying around the house so I used them but you could also use the maplins adapters as they do 12V as well

7) CaMERA MOUNTING: I’ve used ‘auto molding tape’ or ‘badge tape’ to mount the camera, you can get it in any motorfactors. I’ve mounted it to the rear of the
Rear view Mirror stal. Just wipe it with an alcohol wipe before applying the auto molding tape. The board is exposed adn you can see the circuit board I used A bit of electrical tape to disguise this and its not noticable at all. The camera is up here for months and still going strong If i was to get another one I’d like to dip it in some electronic epoxy to save it form the elements but theres been condensation in frony of the camera on the windscreen and its held up to the Irish weather for a few months now

Helicopter crash meath ireland

Surveillance video captures helicopter crash outside school
- Reply by quick capture -

CCTV:September 18/08:A CCTV camera has caught the moment a helicopter crashed close to a school in County Meath in the Irish Republic.

STORY:Three people suffered minor injuries today after a helicopter crashed close to a school in Co Meath.

The pilot, who was the sole occupant, managed to escape from the aircraft before it burst into flames shortly after it came down next to the old Neptun More..e Hotel, near the beach in Bettystown.

Three units of the Drogheda Fire Brigade eventually brought the blaze under control. Two other people suffered minor injuries after being hit by flying debris.

It is understood the helicopter had landed at the nearby beach and let a passenger out but took off shortly afterwards.

The caretaker of the Colaiste na hInse school based in the Neptune Hotel said he saw the pilot climb out of the crashed helicopter and stumble away from it.

“He seemed to be alright, he was walking. He told me there was no-one on board but that there was fuel everywhere” said Brian Emmett.

Mr Emmett also rushed to help a female motorist parked about 20 feet away from the wreckage.

“She had blood on her and I told her to get out of the car because there was fuel lashing out,” he said.

Mr Emmett said he heard the crash while he was locking up the school shortly after 4.30pm.

“I was inside the school and I could hear things hitting the building. I thought the helicopter had flown too close to the school and had blown rubbish around but then I heard a crash.

“I ran out and saw the helicopter at the far end of the car park on the roadside. There was smoke coming from it.”

Cllr Patrick Boshell, who runs a supermarket in Bettystown, said gardaí sealed off the centre of the village very quickly after the crash. “It is all cordoned off. Nobody is being allowed in or out,” he said.

Jurgen Whyte, chief investigator with the Air Accident Investigation Unit (AAIU), said a team of three people was on site investigating the crash.

“We just know that the helicopter would appear to have been landing and it was just touching down and it would appear to have gone out of control.

“It’s early days yet. One person was on board. That person was slightly injured and two locals were hit with flying debris.”
