How effective do you think CCTV cameras are?

errrr…..thanks for that mandysbrother, I should warn other people that they might not want to follow the link though.

About as much use as a chocolate fireguard. Have you tried identifying someone from the footage - they mostly look like something from a picasso painting.

The only thing they're good for is keeping tabs on the mass population. Like the guy having a crafty puff on a cigarette on a railway platform - WOW - high crime indeed!!

Couple them with every other piece of surveillance that this Government wants to introduce and you get the bigger picture - watch all of the people all of the time.

Very effective but totally depends on where it is mounted. The more cameras the better but there will never be sufficient and there will always be a lot of blind spots! Of course there is also the cost to bear!

not very, most criminals dont care their is cctv & just cover themselves.

About the only thing they are good for is tracing steps of a possible suspect.

Very little to no effect on deterring crime. people either don't know they are there or they forget. Criminals don't really care. If they did they wouldn't be robbing banks everyday.

Carry a .45 that will deter crimes against you.

Cameras are a waist of money and it is just a government agency trying to get more funding from the American people with little return on investment.

Crime is down. it has not bin this low since the 70s. It has slowly gone down over the last 30 + years. Violent crimes are way down.

And none of this is related to cameras.

Depends where they are. If they are in a department store they will deter more crime. But if they are some place where they are not highly visible no one will know they are there.

Speeding would end if cameras clocked them with their

number plate. Burglaries would stop with cctv on street

corners , so would knifing and shooting in gangs.

Terrorist would be stopped easier. enough?

We would be more secure and safe to live in peace

as a police officer i personally pray for cctv ebery time there is any crime, as its soo flipping helpful.
Even if the quality isnt enough for an identification in itself it can give an idea of who we are looking for, or it can back up other ovidence relating to an offence,
And certainly its protects us officers when people make complaints of excessive force, the cctv can show whether it was or wasnt.

which protects good officer and shows up the bad ones,

Very effective if used correctly and they can stop assaults before they get out of hand. I don't like being watched by Big Brother, but until the yob culture is brought under control we need them.
